Finding Your Perfect Hat

Finding Your Perfect Hat

It’s rare to see me in a photo without a hat on but I kinda think I’m the exception + not the norm? A lot of people shy away from wearing or committing to anything more than a baseball cap. But I’ve always believed hats are like lipstick, FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT BABY. Do you remember the first time you wore lipstick? You didn’t recognize yourself in the mirror? Now you feel weird without it? Ya, me too.

We all wear many “hats.” AKA roles in our life. You’ll hear me talk about this often. But the more hands I’ve got to hold as many of you have selected your first hat, or added to your collection, the more I’ve learned that there truly is a hat for everyone!

the right hat

If you’ve ventured upon the Gigi Pip Blog, we’ve written about the starter hat for everyone + how to wear a hat with curly hair.

Hats Solve All Problems

Having a bad hair day? Grab a hat.

Does your head freeze or do you have a hard time staying warm? Grab a hat.

Do you not really have time to wash your hair every day? I love how much personality translates into hat wearing. So I’m going to teach you how to find a hat that compliments your beautiful face + helps you stand a bit taller every time you put it on.

The trick to finding “the one” has to do with the proportions of your face. Small features vs large features, oval face shape or heart.

Your hat should complement your features + ultimately, make you feel good.

So here are some good tips to start you out: (notice I didn’t say ‘rules‘. There are no hard + fast rules about wearing hats. Just guidelines to help you get it right!)

Tip #1: Match Your Features

If you have a small face, a smaller hat will suit it, whereas a larger hat might overwhelm it + only make your petite features appear smaller. If you have larger features, go with a hat that’s a bit larger.

Tip #2: Pick A Hat Shape To Highlight or Minimize Features

Finding the perfect hat shape for your face is all about creating balance + working with your natural features to contrast features you either want to highlight or minimize.

Tip #3: Pay Attention to The Shape Of Your Face

If you’ve got a round face:

It’s all about opposites. Choosing a hat that is overly rounded will only add to the roundness of your face. Instead, choose a hat with more angular curves to play up the youthful shape of your face. Try a fedora, a porkpie hat, or a newsboy cap. Pair this with the perfect hairstyle + you can’t go wrong!

My picks? The Olivette or the Marsha.

If you’ve got a heart-shaped face:

J A C K P O T – You’ll look good in pretty much any style, especially a hat with sharp angles or a short brim. You can get away with the trusty fedora (I love the Wes), a  ballcap (this is like a lot of the skateboarder/surf wear hats you see around), a military cap like the James…seriously – anything + everything looks good.

If you’d like to draw attention away from a wider forehead + balance out your narrow chin, try a hat like the Monroe or the Ginger – both of these hats are classic styles that will balance your look!

If you’ve got a square face:

Go for a floppy (It’s like the Harvey was designed with you in mind) or a bowler hat—anything that’s soft or slouchy will soften + round out the strong angles of your face.

Other good options include beanies + berets, as long as you avoid anything too structured or angled, which will simply highlight sharp features.

If you’ve got an oval or oblong face:

Keep in mind: Opposites attract! If you have a longer face, a hat with a short brim or a floppy hat will add width + help shorten your face. Going with a hat that is super tall or with a really wide brim will bring attention to the length of your face.

Try All The Hats

The only real way to figure out if you like the way a hat looks on your head is to try on as many as possible. COME SEE US at our flagship show room in SLC, UT. A little bird told me there’s a special for out of town guests. 🙂 Tell them Ginger sent you. If all else fails, throw on a baseball cap before you head out.

Baseball hats can pretty much flatter anyone + look great if you’re running errands or have a casual day out. Remember the tips above ^^^.
